A majority of the expats in HK seem to travel during the summer – home to visit family, off for relaxing stays in beach paradises, or just somewhere (anywhere) else to escape the humidity and heat here. We, however, just got here so we decided to do a Honkers Staycation. My husband took a week off work and we ticked off a few of the things we want to do here in HK.
First up, a junk trip! These are a HK institution and range in price from cheap to ridiculously expensive depending on the food and beverage you have, and the type of boat. Ours was a bargain because one of our friends (yes! We have some friends!) has access to a junk through his firm. So it was a junket on a junk 🙂 We left from Aberdeen bright and early at 9am and had fantastic weather:
We had a decent sized junk that was towing a speed boat so we could go ashore. Here is our boat:
We went for about an hour and a half before we reached Cheung Sha, where we went ashore to have a swim and some lunch. There was some really beautiful scenery on our way out and back. It was easy to forget that HK island was close by!
It was a hot and sweaty day and really exhausting, but we all had a fantastic time.
Next up was the 1600 Pandas that are visiting HK at the moment. It was cool but the kids weren’t too fussed about it – I think they were more excited about the dragon toys they got with their Happy Meals at McDonalds before we saw the pandas. But I liked it.
Alex is learning how to smile for photos, which produces some quite comical results for “cheese!”.
Our last outing for the week was Ocean Park. We bought annual passes since we can only go for a few hours at a time and since it’s so close. We saw the pandas, did the Ferris wheel, the cable car up the mountain, and saw a kids show. The boys had a blast! Definitely glad we got the annual passes.
Alex was fascinated with the gar fish 🙂
The view from the cable car (and Ferris wheel) is spectacular! And the view inside the cable car was pretty cute 🙂
We also went to the pool a lot. We have an amazing pool at our apartment complex! Both boys have progressed so much with their swimming this summer. Will can go for three or four metres underwater and Alex… Well, Alex has a kamakaze streak in him and is pretty much the only toddler who goes head first on his own down the water slide. But he loves it 🙂
And that was our HK Staycation!
